Community Sailing of Colorado Wins 2018 Outstanding Community Sailing Program Award
Denver, Colo.- Community Sailing of Colorado (CSC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based out of the greater Denver area, received the 2018 Outstanding Community Sailing Program Award from U.S. Sailing, the National Governing Body for the sport of sailing. The award was presented during the 2019 National Sailing Programs Symposium, hosted by the Florida Yacht Club in Jacksonville, Fla. The award is given annually by U.S. Sailing to a program that has made notable contributions to promote public access sailing. U.S. Sailing considers programs of all sizes from across the nation, and programs who are nominated have a specific focus on noticeable growth in their membership, programming offerings, and community involvement/awareness.
Brandon Kass, the Executive Director, and Melissa Gorchynsky, the Development Director, in talking about the award, “We are incredibly honored by this recognition from U.S. Sailing and could not have accomplished any of this without our extraordinary community supporting us the entire way. This is a wonderful achievement that only a handful of other established community programs around the country can share. From our amazing team of volunteers to the talented staff that put countless smiles on faces each season, it truly takes a village. Filled with gratitude, we move into our 2019 season excited to share an outstanding sailing experience with even more people this year”.
Over the past year, CSC has provided programming for over 3,000 new and returning sailors each season out of the Cherry Creek Reservoir in Denver, Colo. and the Boulder Reservoir in Boulder, Colo. This includes their robust adult program, as well as their active adventure and race camps for juniors aged 5-17. The camps help youth to further develop their skills in collaboration, problem-solving, independence, and leadership. Their most effective programming is their Adaptive Sailing Program which provides low to no cost sailing opportunities to individuals living with physical and cognitive disabilities.
